What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
GEO, also called AEO (answer engine optimization), is the practice of getting your brand named and cited when buyers ask an AI which product or provider to use. Your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity before they reach your website, and the shortlist forms inside the answer. GEO is how you get onto that shortlist.
GEO is SEO for the AI answer, not the search results page
For twenty years, being found meant ranking on Google. You optimized pages, earned links, and fought for one of ten blue links. The buyer clicked through, compared for themselves, and decided.
That step is disappearing. When someone asks an AI assistant “what's the best tool for X?” they get one synthesized recommendation naming a handful of brands, and they rarely go further. The comparison now happens inside the answer, not on your website. If the model doesn't mention you, you're not on page two of anything. You simply aren't in the decision.
Generative engine optimization is the discipline of influencing that. GEO and AEO are the same idea under two names: make your brand the one an AI engine names, cites, and recommends when a buyer asks a question in your category. It is the clearest new marketing category of 2025 and 2026, and it is measurable.
Buyers stopped Googling. They ask the AI.
The behavior change is already here. A growing share of high-intent research now starts with a question to an assistant rather than a search box, and the assistant answers with a recommendation instead of a list of links to sift through.
The answer is the new front page
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity name a short list of brands and move on. There is no page of results to work down, only who is in the answer and who is not.
The shortlist forms before you're visited
By the time a buyer reaches a website, the AI has usually already framed the choice. Being absent from that framing means being cut before the consideration set even forms.
Classic rankings no longer carry over
Ranking #1 on Google does not guarantee the AI cites you. The engines read a different, overlapping-but-distinct set of sources, so old wins do not automatically transfer.
How GEO differs from classic SEO
GEO is not a rebrand of SEO. The two overlap, but they optimize for different surfaces and reward different things. The most important difference is that a strong Google ranking does not reliably buy you a mention in an AI answer.
Across industry research, only roughly 17 to 38 percent of the sources AI engines cite overlap with the top 10 Google results for the same query. The majority of what an AI quotes is not the same as what ranks first on Google. Optimizing purely for classic search leaves most of your AI visibility on the table.
Industry research also finds AI Overviews cut clicks to the #1 Google result by roughly 58 percent. Even when you still rank, the click that used to follow the ranking is increasingly absorbed by the answer above it. The visibility that matters is being in the answer, not just under it.
Classic SEO
- Goal: rank a page in the top 10 blue links.
- Unit of success: position on the results page.
- Buyer clicks through and compares for themselves.
- Measured with rank trackers and organic traffic.
- Signals: keywords, backlinks, on-page structure, speed.
GEO / AEO
- Goal: get named and cited inside the AI's recommendation.
- Unit of success: mention rate and share of voice in answers.
- The AI compares for the buyer, then hands one shortlist.
- Measured by auditing what engines actually say, repeatedly.
- Signals: extractable content, third-party sources, comparisons.
What determines whether an AI names your brand
AI engines assemble an answer from what they can read, extract cleanly, and corroborate across sources. A few factors do most of the work in deciding whether your brand makes the cut.
-
01
Extractable, structured content
Clear pages that state what you do, who you're for, and how you compare in plain language the model can lift verbatim. Facts buried in images, PDFs, or marketing prose are hard for an engine to quote.
-
02
Third-party sources the engines actually read
Independent reviews, listicles, directories, and reputable coverage carry disproportionate weight. Engines corroborate across sources, so being described consistently on pages you don't own is often what earns the citation.
-
03
Comparison and alternative content
“X vs Y” and “best alternative to Z” pages map directly onto how buyers phrase questions to AI. When the definitive comparison exists and is accurate, engines lean on it and frame the category around you.
-
04
Consistency and freshness
Engines default to whatever story is most repeated and most current. After a repositioning, price change, or launch, AI answers lag until fresh, well-structured pages give the models something up to date to quote.
How to measure your AI visibility
GEO only works as measurement, not guesswork. Because AI answers vary between runs, a single screenshot proves nothing. You need to run the buyer-intent questions in your category across each engine, repeatedly and in fresh sessions, then classify every result as cited, invisible, or misrepresented and track your share of voice against competitors over time.
That's exactly what a WhoCitesYou audit does. Read the full methodology, or read complete sample reports to see the output. For a live example of answers shifting under a model release, see what changed for brands on GPT-5.6.
